ISI plotting Republic Day attack via Bangladesh route, Indian agencies on high alert

New Delhi: Indian intelligence agencies have sounded a high alert after uncovering a major terror plot by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to infiltrate operatives into India through Bangladesh ahead of Republic Day on January 26.
As reported by IANS, officials said terror groups backed by Pakistan are finding it increasingly difficult to cross into India via the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, forcing the ISI to explore alternative routes. Bangladesh has emerged as the new corridor, with operatives reportedly being moved through sea routes into Bangladesh before attempting entry into India.
According to intelligence inputs, the ISI is working with smuggling networks involved in cattle trade, fake currency circulation and human trafficking to facilitate cross-border movement of terrorists. These syndicates are familiar with infiltration routes along India’s eastern border and are being used to bypass security systems.
Officials said Pakistan is also taking advantage of relaxed shipping and visa norms in Bangladesh introduced in 2024, which have reduced mandatory inspections and security clearances for Pakistani nationals. These changes, agencies believe, have made it easier to move weapons, explosives and operatives into the region.
IANS revealed that Ibtisam Elahi Zaheer, a close associate of Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed, recently visited Bangladesh to coordinate with extremist groups and organised crime networks. Zaheer, an alleged long-time ISI asset, is believed to be overseeing logistics and recruitment for the planned operation.
Agencies are also concerned about Pakistan’s expanding footprint in Bangladesh following recent political changes, with reports suggesting the ISI is attempting to set up sleeper cells and strengthen networks that could target northeastern states and West Bengal.
With several state elections approaching and security forces stretched across regions, officials believe terror outfits are attempting to exploit the situation.
Indian security agencies remain on maximum alert and are closely monitoring border movements, ports and vulnerable coastal zones to prevent any attack ahead of Republic Day.
