NRI industrialist, philanthropist Lord Swraj Paul passes away in London at 94

London: Lord Swraj Paul, the celebrated NRI industrialist and philanthropist, has died in London at the age of 94. He passed away on August 21, 2025, after a period of illness that led to his hospitalisation. Known for his remarkable journey in building the Caparo Group and his contributions to both British industry and philanthropy, Lord Paul leaves behind a profound legacy.

Born on February 18, 1931, in Jalandhar, India, Lord Swraj Paul moved to the United Kingdom in the 1960s. This relocation was initially prompted by a personal tragedy—the search for medical treatment for his daughter Ambika, who succumbed to cancer at the age of four. Despite this early sorrow, Lord Paul persevered, rising to prominence in the UK’s industrial sector by founding the Caparo Group, a steel manufacturing empire that became an influential player in British industry.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Swaraj Paul Ji. His contributions to industry, philanthropy and public service in the UK, and his unwavering support for closer ties with India will always be remembered. I fondly recall our many interactions. Lord Paul extended his influence beyond business through active engagement in public life. He was appointed a life peer in the House of Lords, where he contributed to debates and policymaking, advocating for greater cooperation between the UK and India. His philanthropic efforts were channelled through the Ambika Paul Foundation, established to honour his late daughter’s memory and to support charitable causes.

His later years were marked by further personal losses, including the tragic passing of his son Angad Paul in 2015 and the death of his wife Aruna in 2022. Nevertheless, Lord Paul remained a respected figure known for his resilience, vision, and dedication to societal betterment.
