IndiGo flight suffers tail strike during second landing attempt at Bengaluru airport

Bengaluru: A Guwahati-Bengaluru IndiGo flight suffered a tail strike during its second landing attempt at the Kempegowda International Airport on Sunday, PTI reported, citing sources.

In a statement, IndiGo said the aircraft experienced "abnormal runway contact" while landing amid gusty weather conditions.

All passengers and crew members are safe and have disembarked safely, the airline said.

The IndiGo A321 aircraft has suffered a series of tail strikes at different airports across the country in the past.

"The aircraft is undergoing maintenance checks. It will resume operations after securing necessary clearances," the airline said.

The airline added that all relevant authorities had been informed about the incident.

In August 2026, an IndiGo A321neo suffered a tail strike during landing at Gorakhpur airport in Uttar Pradesh. The aircraft was grounded following the incident, which was reported on August 19.

In March 2025, an IndiGo A321neo operating a Mumbai-Chennai flight suffered a tail strike while landing at Chennai airport. The incident was classified as a serious incident by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, and an investigation was underway, according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The airline also witnessed multiple tail-strike incidents in 2023. In June that year, an A321 aircraft operating a Bengaluru-Ahmedabad flight suffered a tail strike while landing at Ahmedabad airport. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation later suspended the licences of the two pilots involved and imposed a fine of Rs 30 lakh on IndiGo following a special audit that identified deficiencies in its operational and training procedures.
