Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi trains to change: Indian Railways launches overhaul drive

# News Desk

Indian Railways has initiated a large-scale modernisation campaign targeting its premium Shatabdi Express and Jan Shatabdi Express services. The move follows upgrades already introduced in newer trains like Vande Bharat Express and Amrit Bharat Express.

The Railway Board has directed all zonal railways to inspect existing coaches, identify deficiencies, and complete improvements within a set timeframe.

Focus on passenger comfort

The revamp aims to enhance the onboard experience for passengers by addressing long-standing issues in these widely used trains.

Key improvements include upgraded toilet facilities with better drainage systems, refurbished seating with new cushions, and improved mobile charging ports and snack tables.

Railway authorities have also planned technical modifications to reduce jerks during travel, ensuring smoother journeys. Coach interiors, including flooring, panels, and vestibule areas, will be renovated to improve durability and aesthetics.

Security measures will be strengthened through more effective CCTV systems, while upgraded Passenger Announcement and Information Systems (PAPIS) will provide clearer and more reliable travel updates.

The upgrade will also focus on improved lighting inside coaches and clearer destination boards outside, making travel more convenient and user-friendly.

Impact on passengers

Currently, around 25 pairs of Shatabdi Express and more than 20 Jan Shatabdi Express trains connect major cities across India.

Officials say the overhaul will significantly improve travel quality for millions of passengers, particularly those relying on these premium yet accessible services.

The initiative reflects Indian Railways’ broader strategy to modernise its fleet and meet rising passenger expectations, ensuring better reliability, comfort, and service standards across its network.
