Indian army airlifts kidney in emergency mission to save soldier’s wife

Chandigarh: In a major humanitarian and medical effort, Western Command hospital in Chandimandir, working alongside Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak, successfully coordinated the retrieval and emergency air transportation of a kidney from a brain-dead road accident victim, giving a fresh chance at life to the wife of a serving soldier.
The operation was carried out on May 16 by Command Hospital Chandimandir in Panchkula under the aegis of the Army’s Western Command.
Army Aviation helicopter used for emergency transport
According to the Western Command, an Army Aviation helicopter carried out the high-priority mission between Chandimandir and Rohtak within strict timelines.
The harvested kidney, along with the Command Hospital medical team, was airlifted swiftly for an urgent transplant procedure at Chandimandir.
Officials said the successful surgery gave a “new lease of life” to the wife of a serving soldier and highlighted the Indian Army’s operational efficiency, humanitarian commitment and effective coordination with civilian medical institutions.
Command Hospital Chandimandir recognised for medical excellence
Command Hospital Chandimandir had previously received the prestigious Chief of the Army Staff Unit Certificate of Appreciation for its professionalism, commitment and continued excellence in military healthcare services.
The hospital has achieved several milestones in recent years, including the launch of a Bone Marrow Transplant Programme and the establishment of an advanced Haematology Ward.
It was also recognised by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as a leading emerging National Organ Transplant and Retrieval Centre in August 2024.
In addition, the hospital has been accredited as a Kidney Transplant Centre.
