IMD Dec 9 weather update: Hyderabad foggy, Chennai rainy, Kolkata misty; Delhi, Ranchi, Lucknow reel under cold wave

India is set to witness a wide spectrum of weather conditions on Tuesday, December 9, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing updates that highlight a mix of fog, light rain, heavy rainfall alerts, and a deepening cold wave across several regions.
In the southern cities, the weather will remain largely calm with pockets of mist, fog, and light rainfall. Hyderabad is expected to begin the day under fog and mist before transitioning to a partly cloudy sky.
Temperatures will hover between 13°C and 31°C, and humidity levels will range from 26 to 57 percent, with no weather warnings issued.
Further east, Amaravati will see a partly cloudy sky accompanied by haze. The regional temperature will remain steady, ranging from 18°C to 31°C, and authorities have not issued any warnings for the area.
In Bengaluru, residents can expect mild conditions marked by morning mist. The city’s minimum temperature is likely to settle at 17°C, rising to a maximum of 27°C during the day. Humidity will remain comparatively high, oscillating between 60 and 90 percent, although no rainfall warnings have been sounded.
Moving westward along the coast, Thiruvananthapuram may experience moderate rain or thunderstorms. The sky will remain partly cloudy through the day, with temperatures forecast between 24°C and 33°C. Humidity will stay on the higher side at 70 to 85 percent, and the IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall in the region.
Meanwhile, Chennai will experience a generally cloudy sky with possibilities of light rain. Temperatures in the Tamil Nadu capital will remain between 24°C and 30°C, and no major warnings have been announced.
Beyond the southern peninsula, the IMD has issued significant alerts for the eastern coast, where heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected over the next 24 to 48 hours.
States including West Bengal and Odisha may see dark clouds and intense rainfall on December 9. The weather agency has extended its rain alert to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry until December 11, anticipating continued moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal.
Fishermen along the eastern and southeastern coastline have been urged to avoid venturing into the sea due to the likelihood of thunderstorms and rough conditions. Several regions in Kerala are expected to receive rainfall, while heavy rain remains possible in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh.
As the south and east brace for rain, North and Central India are facing a tightening cold wave. States such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand are witnessing severe temperature drops, with cities including Patna, Purnia, Kishanganj, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, and Prayagraj experiencing an intense cold snap.
Authorities have advised residents, especially early-morning commuters, to take precautions against the freezing temperatures.
The national capital, Delhi, may also experience a sharp dip in temperatures. A cold wave is likely to prevail, and residents have been urged to wear sufficient warm clothing.
In the Himalayan states, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, dense fog continues to disrupt visibility, prompting snowfall alerts. Temperatures across the hills are predicted to fall significantly through the week.
Meanwhile, West Bengal is expected to remain largely dry over the next seven days, though shallow to moderate fog reducing visibility to below 1 km is likely in northern districts. On Monday, Darjeeling recorded a minimum of 6.2°C, while Sriniketan in Birbhum was the coldest in the plains at 10°C. Kolkata recorded 15°C and may see morning mist on Tuesday.
India’s weather landscape, thus, remains dynamic on December 9, with rainfall in the south and east contrasting sharply with deepening winter conditions in the north.
