Humayun Kabir sweeps Rejinagar: Expelled TMC leader’s AJUP emerges as Murshidabad power broker

Kolkata: Humayun Kabir, the chairman of the newly formed Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), has secured a decisive victory in the Rejinagar constituency, marking a significant personal and political triumph following his expulsion from the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
According to data from the Election Commission, Kabir dominated the race in Rejinagar, maintaining an overwhelming lead of 77,236 votes over his nearest challenger, Bapan Ghosh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), after nine rounds of tabulation. Simultaneously, Kabir established a commanding lead in the Nowda constituency, where he surged ahead of his closest rival by 56,292 votes following the 12th round of counting.
Kabir, a former minister who was suspended by the TMC in December 2025 after proposing the construction of a mosque in Murshidabad modelled after the Babri Masjid, viewed the results as a direct rebuttal to his former party.
"Grateful to the people of Murshidabad, who replied to the injustice meted out to me and the discrimination against minorities by the Mamata Banerjee government," Kabir told PTI Videos. "The win is more heartening as our party was founded only four months back after the treatment meted out to me by TMC supremo and her nephew."
The AJUP chief had previously forecasted that his party, established just months prior to the 2026 assembly elections, would secure at least four seats and function as a critical power broker in the formation of the next state government. While statewide trends indicate a historic performance for the BJP, Kabir’s dual-seat momentum suggests his fledgling organisation has successfully carved out a significant foothold in the minority-heavy Murshidabad district.
