Haridwar: Following the tragic stampede near the Mansa Devi Temple on Sunday that claimed six lives, authorities in Haridwar have announced the immediate implementation of a one-way movement system to manage the heavy footfall of pilgrims and prevent further such incidents.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramendra Singh Dobhal confirmed the move, stating that the decision was taken after consultations with the temple administration and trust. “We have spoken with the temple administration and trust, and we have concluded that implementing a one-way system is absolutely essential. The system will be put in place with immediate effect,” he told ANI.

To bolster security, a case has been registered in connection with the incident and SP City has been appointed as the nodal officer with additional authority. “During the month of Sawan, there is a continuous crowd, so we are reviewing and enhancing our security measures to prevent such incidents from recurring,” the SSP added.

In response to the tragedy, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered a magisterial inquiry and announced ex-gratia compensation of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured.

Addressing the media, CM Dhami said, “Some of the injured have been referred to AIIMS Rishikesh. Our priority is to ensure they receive the best medical treatment. A toll-free helpline has also been issued.”

President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences via social media, calling the news of the deaths “deeply painful”. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote, “I express my heartfelt condolences to all the grieving families. I pray that all the injured devotees recover quickly.”

The stampede occurred during the holy month of Sawan, a time that draws thousands of devotees to the Mansa Devi Temple. The temple, perched on a hilltop, is one of the most prominent pilgrimage sites in Haridwar.
