Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is all set to revive its Nashik facility (Maharashtra) operations to produce Su-30MKI fighter jets for Indian Air Force. This move comes on the backdrop of a major deal approved in September 2023, for the manufacture of 12 new Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets. The deal has an order value of $1.3bn.

The Nashik facility is expected to soon resume the production of fighter jets to meet the latest demand by IAF. This will not only enhance the IAF’s combat readiness but also support India’s broader push for self-reliance in defence under the 'Make in India' initiative.

In addition to the new production order, the Air Force is preparing to comprehensively upgrade 84 existing Su-30MKI fighter jets under the ambitious 'Super Sukhoi' programme.

What is 'Super Sukhoi' programme?

  • The initiative will elevate the combat capability of existing Sukhoi aircraft integrating state-of-the-art Indian technology and advanced stealth features
  • The upgraded jets will include advanced radar systems with a range 1.5 to 1.7 times greater than current model
  • infrared search and track (IRST) sensors developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL),
  • cutting-edge mission computers
  • enhanced electronic warfare suites
  • an upgraded cockpit layout
  • modern weapon systems
  • with the integration of manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) technology the upgraded jets can coordinate with combat and surveillance drones

The Super Sukhoi deal is already approved by the Defence Acquisition Council but still awaiting its final clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security. The initiative amounting to INR 63,000 crore will ensure that the jets can operate in high-threat environments, positioning them in the league of fifth-generation fighter aircraft.

Deliveries from the Nashik plant for the new Su-30MKIs are expected to commence within the next few years. This initiative will further lead to economic development of Nashik by giving employment to local talent and foster strong R&D set-up in the country.
