Google AI hub in Vizag will accelerate innovation, growth: Sunder Pichai after call with PM Modi

New Delhi: Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Tuesday announced the tech giant’s plans to set up its first-ever AI hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, following a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Calling it a “landmark development,” Pichai shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting Google’s commitment to accelerating AI innovation and digital growth in India.

“Great to speak with India PM @narendramodi @OfficialINDIAai to share our plans for the first-ever Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam, a landmark development,” Pichai posted.

He added that the hub would bring together gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure, creating a powerful foundation for AI-driven growth across the country.

The announcement comes alongside a major investment commitment from Google. Speaking at a company event, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian revealed that the company will invest USD 15 billion over the next five years to build the AI hub.

“This will combine AI infrastructure, new data centre capacity, large energy scale sources, and expanded optical fibre network,” Kurian said, underscoring the scale of Google’s ambitions in India.

The Visakhapatnam hub is expected to play a key role in enabling Indian enterprises, developers, and users to access Google’s cutting-edge AI technologies, contributing to job creation, digital innovation, and enhanced global competitiveness.
