How did Gaurav Gogoi lose Jorhat despite a recent Lok Sabha win?

In a major political upset in Assam, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi lost his Assembly election debut from Jorhat, marking the first defeat of his political career.
BJP veteran Hitendranath Goswami defeated him by 23,182 votes, securing 69,439 votes against Gogoi’s 46,257 and retaining the seat for a third consecutive term.
The result comes as a surprise, especially since Gogoi had won the 2024 Lok Sabha election from the same region with a comfortable margin.
Why was the Jorhat contest so important?
The election was seen as a crucial moment for Gogoi, who was attempting to shift from national politics to the state level, following the path of his father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
The Congress had projected him as its chief ministerial face, making Jorhat one of the most closely watched seats in the Assam Assembly elections.
Did controversy and campaign strategy play a role?
The campaign turned sharply political after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made allegations regarding Gogoi’s family, triggering a major controversy.
While Gogoi dismissed the claims as baseless, the issue remained in the spotlight throughout the campaign.
At the same time, Gogoi spent significant time campaigning across Assam for Congress and alliance candidates. This limited his direct engagement in Jorhat, which may have impacted local voter connect.
What worked in BJP’s favour?
Hitendranath Goswami’s strong local presence and established voter base played a key role. His consistent hold over the constituency helped the BJP maintain its advantage despite a high-profile challenger.
The result also reflects the BJP’s continued strength in Assam’s electoral landscape.
What was Gogoi’s pitch to voters?
Gogoi framed his campaign around governance and legacy, often invoking the tenure of Tarun Gogoi. He spoke about restoring stability, improving economic growth, and offering an alternative to what he described as “dirty politics of the past six to seven years”.
He also focused on rural outreach, women voters, and alliance-building with regional and Left parties.
Despite the defeat, Gogoi remains a key Congress figure at both state and national levels. Known for his strong presence in Parliament, he continues to be an important voice in opposition politics.
