EPFO launches ‘Passbook Lite’ for easy access to PF balance, contributions and withdrawals

New Delhi: Union Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, on Thursday announced that the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched a new feature called Passbook Lite. The facility allows members to view a summarised version of their PF contributions, withdrawals and balance directly through the member portal, eliminating the need to log into the separate passbook portal.
What is Passbook Lite?
The new feature is part of EPFO’s ongoing reforms to make its services more efficient, transparent and user-friendly. With Passbook Lite integrated into the member portal, users can access essential details through a single login, improving convenience and reducing dependence on multiple platforms.
For members who want a more detailed view of their passbook, including graphical insights, the existing passbook portal will continue to be available. Officials said this integrated approach will also ease the load on the current system while streamlining back-end operations.
Annexure K made member-friendly
Another significant reform announced is that members can now download Annexure K, the transfer certificate generated when employees switch jobs, directly in PDF format from the member portal. Until now, the document was only shared between PF offices and provided to members upon request.
According to the government, “A reform has been introduced that now enables members to directly download Annexure K in PDF format from the Member Portal itself. This will enable members to track status of transfer applications online, ensuring full transparency and allowing members to easily verify their PF transfers. It will enable them to confirm that the PF balance and service period are correctly updated in the new account, promoting ease of living, transparency, and trust in EPFO processes.”
The move is expected to help employees maintain a permanent digital record for future use, particularly important when calculating EPS (Employees’ Pension Scheme) benefits.
Faster claim processing on the cards
Currently, PF transfers, settlements, advances and refunds require approval from senior officers such as RPFCs or Officers-in-Charge, often causing delays. The reforms aim to simplify this multi-layered approval process, leading to quicker claim settlements and reduced processing times.
The scope of the new system will cover PF transfers and settlements, advances and past accumulations, refunds, cheque/ECS/NEFT returns, and interest adjustments. Authorities expect that by reducing approval layers, the initiative will bring faster service delivery, improved accountability at the field office level, and greater transparency.
By consolidating services under one login, EPFO hopes to reduce member grievances, provide a smoother experience and boost trust in the system. Officials said the focus of the reform is to deliver seamless, transparent and timely services to millions of employees across India.
