Can E20 petrol affect your car insurance? Government responds to growing concerns

Can filling your vehicle with E20 petrol lead to insurance troubles later? That's the question many motorists have been asking as ethanol-blended fuel becomes more common across India.
The government has now stepped in to address the concern, saying that using E20 fuel does not make a vehicle insurance policy invalid and should not affect insurance claims.
The clarification comes after claims surfaced suggesting that motorists using E20 petrol could face complications if they file an insurance claim. According to the Centre, discussions with stakeholders found no evidence to support such concerns.
For vehicle owners, the message is straightforward: using approved E20 fuel will not, by itself, put insurance coverage at risk.
The government also pointed out that ethanol-blended petrol is already used in several countries around the world. Nations such as the United States, Brazil and Japan have long adopted ethanol blending as part of their fuel strategy, while Brazil's standard petrol contains a higher ethanol mix than what is currently being rolled out in India.
Officials said India's ethanol-blending programme has delivered benefits beyond the fuel pump. Reduced dependence on imported crude oil has helped the country save more than Rs 1.4 lakh crore in foreign exchange, while creating additional demand for crops used in ethanol production.
The programme is also being promoted as a way to strengthen energy security and lower emissions from the transport sector.
