Kangana Ranaut faces FIR over ‘Generation Gutter’ remark, Agra court hearing on August 21

New Delhi: BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut has landed in legal trouble over her controversial 'Generation Gutter' remark directed at students involved in protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over the NEET paper leak issue.

An Agra-based lawyer and Rajiv Gandhi Bar Association president, Ramashankar Sharma, has filed a case against Ranaut before the Special Court for MPs/MLAs in Agra, alleging that her remarks insulted students and their parents. The court is scheduled to hear the matter on August 21, according to ANI.

Ranaut had been actively reacting to videos and posts related to the student protests. In one of her social media posts, she described the protesters as 'Generation Gutter', triggering criticism over her remarks against young people participating in the agitation.

Reports at the time said she had criticised the language and conduct displayed in videos from the protests and also made disparaging comments about sections of Gen Z.

Following the backlash, Ranaut sought to clarify her position, saying that her remarks were aimed at a specific section of youngsters and not the entire generation.

She argued that she was referring to protesters who were allegedly using abusive language and behaving inappropriately during the demonstrations. The latest legal action, however, has brought the controversy back into focus.

Speaking to ANI, advocate Ramashankar Sharma said he had filed the suit in the Special Court for MPs/MLAs over Ranaut's reference to students protesting at Jantar Mantar as the 'gutter generation'.

'She has a habit of making such remarks. She has insulted the country's students and abused their parents. This is a matter concerning the students' future,' Sharma said, according to ANI.

The lawyer's complaint comes amid an ongoing political and public debate over the language used to describe students protesting against alleged irregularities and the NEET examination system.

Ranaut's remarks had already drawn criticism from several quarters. Actor Sonu Sood, responding to the controversy, said young people should be spoken about with respect and criticised the 'Generation Gutter' remark.

The controversy also saw Ranaut defend herself against allegations that she had branded an entire generation as 'gutter'.

In subsequent comments, she maintained that her criticism was directed at particular individuals and that the broader Gen Z population should not be judged by the actions of a few.

With the Agra court now scheduled to hear the matter on August 21, the remarks have moved beyond a social media controversy and into the legal arena.
