Why these 10 candidates? DMDK’s picks hint at a bigger game in Tamil Nadu Election 2026

Chennai: The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam on Saturday announced its list of 10 candidates for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026, signalling a strategy that blends legacy leadership, experienced politicians, and emerging youth faces.
Leading the list is party general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth, who will contest from Vridhachalam, a constituency closely associated with the party’s late founder Vijayakanth, popularly known as “Captain”. The move is seen as both strategic and symbolic, aimed at reinforcing the party’s core voter base and emotional connection.

In a clear push towards generational transition, the DMDK has fielded its youth wing secretary V. Vijaya Prabhakaran from Virudhunagar. His candidature underscores the party’s effort to balance continuity with renewal in Tamil Nadu’s competitive political landscape.
