Delhi traffic advisory: Major restrictions near Qutub Minar today, April 12

New Delhi: The Delhi Traffic Police issued a comprehensive advisory for Sunday, April 12, 2026, outlining special regulations to manage an anticipated influx of visitors and vehicles near Qutub Minar and the DDA Mehrauli Archaeological Park.
The restrictive measures will be enforced from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. to accommodate the surge in footfall within the historic district. Traffic authorities cautioned that congestion is expected on Anuvrat Marg, Crescent Road, and Kalka Dass Marg, as well as several interconnected thoroughfares.
Restricted Access and Enforcement
To streamline movement, a strict prohibition on heavy and commercial vehicles has been implemented. These vehicles are barred from proceeding toward Qutub Minar via Phool Mandi, Masjid Haji Ali Jan, and Kalka Dass Marg.
The advisory emphasised that no parking or halting will be allowed on these critical stretches. Police warned that any vehicles found in violation of these orders will be towed immediately. Commuters are urged to plan their travel in advance, utilise official Delhi Traffic Police channels for real-time updates, and prioritise public transport or the Metro. Alternative corridors, such as Aurobindo Marg, are recommended for those travelling through the area.
Metro Safety Initiative
Simultaneously, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is conducting a week-long safety campaign focused on the proper use of lifts, escalators, and travelators throughout its extensive network.
According to a DMRC press release, the corporation currently maintains 965 lifts, 1,297 escalators, and 42 travelators. Notably, the Kashmere Gate Metro station has achieved a global record for having the highest number of escalators in a single station, with a total of 53.
Public Awareness and Accessibility
The campaign, which runs from April 7 to 13, is the only drive of its kind among Indian metro systems. DMRC staff, scout and guide volunteers have been stationed at various high-traffic terminals, using placards to educate commuters on safety protocols.
Special emphasis is being placed on accessibility, with volunteers providing tailored assistance and guidance to elderly passengers and persons with disabilities.
While the DMRC maintains that the functionality of its transit equipment is a top priority, officials noted that accidents occasionally occur due to passenger negligence. The current initiative aims to mitigate these risks through direct public engagement and the promotion of precautionary measures.
