A 50-year-old man was tragically killed on Thursday when a large neem tree uprooted and fell on him and his daughter as they were riding a bike in South Delhi's Kalkaji area. The incident, which also damaged several parked vehicles, occurred amid continuous heavy rainfall that brought the city to a standstill.

The victim, identified as Sudhir Kumar, was riding with his 22-year-old daughter, Priya, when the tree collapsed in Kalkaji's B Block. CCTV footage from the scene, captured at 9:50 am, showed the tree falling on the bike and other adjacent vehicles. While one car managed to escape, the father and daughter were trapped beneath the fallen tree.

Police responded swiftly to the emergency call, launching a rescue operation. Both victims were extricated and rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Sudhir Kumar later succumbed to his injuries.

City grapples with waterlogging

The heavy downpour on Thursday morning led to widespread waterlogging and traffic gridlock across the capital. Commuters faced major difficulties during the morning rush hour as key areas, including Lajpat Nagar, Rohtak Road, and the Dhaula Kuan-Gurugram road, were inundated.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'orange' alert, warning of more rain throughout the day. Delhi's primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded 13.1 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Thursday, while other stations reported significantly higher rainfall, with Aya Nagar logging 57.4 mm. The rain also led to a drop in temperature, with the minimum temperature settling at 23.6 degrees Celsius, 3.2 notches below normal.
