Delhi Police detain Abhijeet Dipke as he leaves home for Tiranga march

New Delhi: Delhi Police detained Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) activist Abhijeet Dipke on Saturday as he left his residence for the proposed ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ rally at Connaught Place, where restrictions are in force under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The detention came after Delhi Police served Dipke a notice under the Delhi Police Act, asking him to comply with the law in connection with the proposed rally.
The notice stated that Section 163 was in force in the Connaught Place area and that the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) had not granted permission for the proposed Tiranga Yatra. It warned that proceeding with the march or gathering a crowd in the area could invite legal action for violating the restrictions.
Delhi Police Deputy Commissioner of Police Sharma, when asked about the notice issued to Dipke, said it was intended to make the activist aware of the restrictions and the need to comply with the law.
“Basically, it is to follow the law. They have also been informed that Section 163 of the BNSS is imposed here. And due to all these things, what kind of impact it has on the area—especially since it is the Connaught Place area, and right now the festive season is going on—so they have been made aware of all these things, and have been told to follow the law,” he said.
Sharma said police would consider appropriate legal action if the directions were not followed.
“We will see, whatever legal actions there are, we will see,” the DCP said.
The notice clarified that waving the national flag was not prohibited, but holding an unpermitted march or gathering a crowd in violation of the restrictions could lead to legal action. Dipke was also reminded of the requirements under the Flag Code of India regarding the proper display and treatment of the national flag.
The proposed ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ rally was to be held at Connaught Place on Saturday. The police action comes amid restrictions on public gatherings in the area and the absence of permission from the NDMC for the event.
