New Delhi: In a crucial step towards promoting sustainable transport, Delhi has officially registered its first electric Gramin Sewa vehicle. The new electric vehicle, designed for last-mile connectivity, can carry six passengers and a driver. This move is part of the city's efforts to encourage environmentally friendly mobility options.

Launched in 2011, Gramin Sewa is a para-transit system that operates high-capacity three-wheelers, offering essential transport services in rural areas, unauthorised resettlement colonies, and JJ clusters. These vehicles are vital for providing affordable transport to Delhi's underserved communities.

As part of a wider green initiative, the Delhi government has mandated the replacement of all CNG-powered Gramin Sewa vehicles, which were originally registered under the 2010-11 scheme, with electric models. This move aims to cut down on pollution and foster clean, green mobility solutions.

Chandu Chaurasia, President of Delhi's Gramin Sewa Union, expressed his excitement over the milestone, saying, "The registration of the first six-plus-one electric Gramin Sewa vehicle in Delhi is a matter of great happiness for all of us drivers. We congratulate the transport department officials, the government, and the new administration, which aims to bring change within 100 days. We also hope for subsidies and concessions to support this transition."

Guidelines for vehicle replacement

A transport department directive issued in September last year requires that all CNG-powered Gramin Sewa vehicles be replaced with electric alternatives that can carry a maximum of six passengers plus a driver. These vehicles must also meet the approval standards set by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

Although around 6,000 Gramin Sewa autorickshaws were originally registered, only 2,000 to 3,000 remain operational today. Owners who wish to replace their old vehicles must apply through an online, Aadhaar-based process, or use an Enrolment ID (EID) if Aadhaar is unavailable. A no-dues certificate is also required to confirm that there are no outstanding taxes, fines, or legal issues.
