New Delhi: Tensions erupted in West Delhi after a 26-year-old man died following a clash that reportedly began during Holi celebrations, prompting protests and heavy police deployment in the area.

The incident occurred in Uttam Nagar, where a dispute between two families escalated into violence. Police said the confrontation began after a water balloon thrown by an 11-year-old girl during Holi celebrations accidentally splashed coloured water on a woman from another family.

Dispute escalates into violent clash

According to investigators, the girl was celebrating Holi on the terrace with relatives when one of the balloons burst on the road below, splashing coloured water on the woman. The incident led to an argument between members of the two families that soon escalated into a physical confrontation.

Later that night, 26-year-old Tarun Kumar was allegedly attacked by a group of neighbours when he returned home after playing Holi with friends. Family members claimed he was beaten with sticks, bats and stones and that a heavy stone was thrown onto his chest while he was lying on the road.

Tarun was rushed to hospital with severe injuries but died during treatment on March 5.

Arrests made, investigation underway

Police registered a murder case and arrested several suspects in connection with the attack. Officials said eight people have been arrested, while one minor has been detained as part of the investigation.

According to Kushal Pal Singh, authorities are working to identify others allegedly involved in the assault.

Investigators said both families had known each other for decades and had previous disputes over issues such as parking, garbage disposal and water supply. Police said they are examining all angles and have not conclusively classified the incident as a communal clash.

Protests and tension in the area

Following the youth’s death, anger spread among residents and members of some organisations. Large protests were held outside the Uttam Nagar Police Station, with around 500 protesters gathering to demand strict action against the accused.

During the demonstrations, two vehicles were reportedly set on fire and others were vandalised. Members of Bajrang Dal allegedly issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the police demanding arrests before staging protests.

Police said around 200–300 personnel were deployed in the area to maintain order. Security was tightened in the narrow lanes of the locality, and access to some inner streets was temporarily restricted.

Authorities said the situation remains tense but under control. Personnel from the Rapid Action Force and Delhi Police have been stationed in the area to prevent further unrest.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the clash and the subsequent death are continuing.
