Collegium proposes to transfer justice K Vinod Chandran to Guwahati HC; recommends five SC judges

New Delhi: The Supreme Court collegium on Tuesday recommended to the union government the transfer of Kerala High Court judge, justice K Vinod Chandran, to the Guwahati High Court. If accepted, he is likely to become chief justice of the court in January.

The collegium had earlier proposed transferring him to the Bombay High Court. However, the union government declined it.

The collegium chaired by CJI DY Chandrachud also proposed elevation of five, including three high court chief justices, as Supreme Court justices.

The apex court has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges, including the CJI, and the number is set to go down to 27 again with the retirement of Justice S Abdul Nazeer on January 4.

The proposed SC justices are: Rajasthan HC CJ Pankaj Mittal, Patna HC CJ Sanjay Karol, Manipur HC CJ PV Sanjay Kumar, Patna HC justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, and Allahabad HC justice Manoj Misra. However, senior advocate KV Viswanadthan, who was earlier considered by the collegium for direct elevation, did not find a place in the recommendation.
