Calcutta High Court orders CBI SIT probe into RG Kar ‘cover-up’ allegations

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations that crucial aspects of the sensational RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case were allegedly suppressed or “hushed up”.
A division bench ordered that the SIT be headed by the CBI’s Joint Director (East) and submit a detailed status report before the court by June 25.
The development comes amid continued judicial scrutiny into the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor inside Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024, a case that had triggered nationwide outrage, protests by doctors, and demands for justice across India.
The High Court had earlier transferred the investigation to the CBI on August 13, 2024.
However, the victim’s parents later moved the court seeking a fresh probe, alleging that several critical aspects of the case were not properly investigated.
The main accused, Sanjay Roy, was convicted on January 18, 2025, and sentenced to life imprisonment two days later.
The CBI subsequently approached the High Court seeking capital punishment for Roy, while the convict later challenged the verdict and sought an acquittal.
The matter saw several legal twists over the past year, including the recusal of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh and the eventual release of the case by another division bench earlier this year.
Thursday’s order is being viewed as a major turn in the high-profile case, with the court now seeking answers on whether evidence, leads, or procedural lapses were deliberately concealed during the investigation.
Further details are awaited as the matter remains under active hearing.
