Kota: A woman has died and five others remain in a critical condition following complications after caesarean deliveries at a government medical college and hospital, officials said on Wednesday.

According to hospital authorities, 12 to 13 women underwent caesarean sections on Monday evening. Within hours, six of them developed serious complications, including low blood pressure, falling platelet counts and urinary blockage.

The affected women were moved to the nephrology ward for specialised care, while their newborn babies were shifted to the neonatal unit at NMCH, said Superintendent Dr Nilesh Jain. One of the six women died during treatment on Tuesday.

A five-member medical team, led by Dr Vikas Khandeliya, has been assigned to oversee the treatment and monitoring of the remaining patients. In parallel, another five-member committee headed by Dr Suresh Dulara has been set up to investigate the cause of the complications, with hospital authorities acknowledging that “something went wrong”.

Dr Jain said it was notable that only six of the women developed complications, suggesting there may be a specific underlying cause. A separate death audit committee has also been constituted to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatality.

“The condition of all five women is currently stable, but they will remain at risk for the next 72 to 96 hours,” he said.

Local MLA Sandeep Sharma visited the hospital to review the situation and said that a detailed inquiry was under way to establish why complications arose in only a subset of the patients following surgery.
