‘Confident of positive, meaningful discussions’ at BRICS Summit, says PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed confidence that the upcoming BRICS Summit will see positive and meaningful discussions on issues of global importance, with a focus on the welfare of people worldwide.

Ahead of the two-day summit beginning on Saturday, Modi said leaders from across the world would gather for the BRICS meeting in the coming days.

“There is full confidence that the summit will feature positive and meaningful discussions on various issues, with aspirations for global welfare,” the Prime Minister said in a post accompanying a Sanskrit verse.

Modi is also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin later on Friday, ahead of the summit.

The talks are expected to cover strategic trade resilience, cross-border payment mechanisms and energy security, along with possible pathways for resolving conflicts linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe and West Asia.

According to a statement from Kremlin, Putin will address the plenary session of the BRICS Business Forum on Friday. The forum traditionally precedes the leaders’ summit and brings together business representatives from BRICS member countries.

On Saturday, Modi will participate in the BRICS Summit, which will be attended by several world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping.

BRICS has emerged as an important platform for coordination among major emerging economies, including on economic policy and global governance. The grouping has also become a forum for advancing the interests of the Global South in multilateral institutions.

Its agenda covers areas including development, finance, technology, trade and people-to-people exchanges. BRICS also provides its members with a platform to share experiences and work together on common challenges.

India is holding the BRICS chairship for the fourth time in 2026. Its chairship is guided by the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”

The theme reflects India’s focus on strengthening existing BRICS achievements and improving institutional effectiveness, while placing development, sustainability and innovation at the centre of the agenda.

India has also highlighted the aspirations of the Global South and aims to strengthen BRICS as a constructive and solutions-oriented forum.
