Bombay High Court cancels bail of Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre in doctors assault case

Mumbai: In the case involving the alleged assault on three doctors at a civic hospital, the Bombay High Court on Saturday cancelled the bail granted to Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) corporator Ramesh Mhatre. The court directed him to surrender before the police by 5 pm on Sunday, July 19.

The order came during a special Saturday sitting, where the High Court took suo motu cognisance of the decision to grant bail to Mhatre and four other accused in the case.

Mhatre and four others had been booked for allegedly brutally assaulting three doctors attached to a civic hospital. The High Court examined the circumstances surrounding the grant of bail and decided to revoke the relief extended to the corporator.

Directing immediate compliance with its order, the court instructed Mhatre to surrender before the investigating agency no later than 5 pm on July 19.

A court taking suo motu cognisance means it initiates proceedings on its own, without waiting for a formal petition from any party. Such intervention is generally reserved for matters the court considers to involve public interest or issues affecting the administration of justice.
