BMC poll day holiday: What’s open and what’s closed in Maharashtra today

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has announced a public holiday on Thursday, January 15, across all regions where municipal corporation elections are being held, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Navi Mumbai.
The order, issued by the State Election Commission, aims to facilitate smooth polling and encourage higher voter turnout in elections to 29 municipal corporations across the state.
The holiday will apply to:
- Government and semi-government offices
- State corporations and boards
- Public sector undertakings
- Banks
- Central government offices located within municipal election jurisdictions
Many private offices are also expected to remain shut, though final decisions will depend on individual organisational policies.
Essential services to function normally
Emergency and essential services will remain fully operational. Hospitals, ambulance services, police and fire departments will continue functioning without interruption to ensure public safety.
Public transport to run as usual
Local trains, BEST buses and other public transport services will operate normally. Authorities may introduce additional arrangements to help voters reach polling stations conveniently.
Schools and colleges closed
Government and civic-run schools and colleges will remain closed for the day. Several private educational institutions may also suspend classes, particularly where campuses are designated as polling centres.

Polling stations equipped for all voters
The State Election Commission has put in place special arrangements for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, pregnant women and single parents with children. Polling booths will be equipped with electricity, drinking water, toilets and ramps to ensure full accessibility.
Four-day dry period enforced
A four-day dry period from January 13 to 16 has been imposed in all 29 municipal corporation areas. During this period:
- Sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited
- Liquor shops, bars and permit rooms will remain closed
- Strict enforcement and enhanced security measures have been ordered
Stock markets closed
Financial markets will also observe a trading holiday on January 15. Both the BSE and NSE will remain closed across all segments, including equities, derivatives, commodities and electronic gold receipts.
