BJP leadership to see total overhaul; Kerala chief Surendran may get new role

Thodupuzha: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to undergo a major leadership change at both the national and state levels, with state presidents in most regions, including Kerala, expected to be replaced during organizational elections starting next month. 

National President JP Nadda will also step down as part of the leadership shakeup.

This comprehensive change is part of a strategy adopted by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the national level. After securing three consecutive terms in power, the RSS has assessed that the BJP's organizational structure has weakened in several areas. To address this, the RSS plans to bring in leaders who are closely aligned with its ideology and can advance the party without internal conflicts. The party is planning to appoint new state leadership in the coming months. 

BJP eyes changes in Kerala

In Kerala, where the BJP has no representation in the state assembly, the situation is unique compared to other states. Since early 2020, the party has made several changes to uplift the party in the state. Under the leadership of K. Surendran, the party was initially divided into two major factions, but now there are at least four competing factions.

The organizational structure became weak with the recall of K. Subhash, the general secretary in charge of the organization. Many party members have complained that the party has been taken over by Surendran loyalists, with prominent leaders sidelined and given no responsibilities, including during the Palakkad by-election.

As part of the leadership reshuffle, Surendran and other key leaders would be given national-level roles.

At the national level, the RSS is considering several prominent names for the position of National President, including Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Bhupender Yadav, and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. A final decision will be made after consultations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
