Karnataka braces for heavy rainfall; Red alerts, school closures announced

Karnataka: The Meteorological Department has declared a red alert for several districts in Karnataka due to intense pre-monsoon showers, with continued rainfall reported across Bengaluru, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi districts.

A red alert has specifically been issued for Kodagu district on Tuesday, 11 June. In response, the Kodagu District Commissioner has declared a precautionary holiday for all Anganwadi centres in the district and has issued official orders accordingly.

Similarly, the Udupi district administration has announced a holiday for Anganwadi centres, primary and secondary schools, as well as government-aided and private educational institutions on Thursday.

Rain warnings for next 10 days

The Meteorological Department has already warned of heavy rains continuing across the state for the next 10 days. An alert has been declared for the coastal and Malnad districts for the next four days.

Due to continuous rainfall, landslides are likely to occur in the Malnad regions.

Bengaluru will remain under alert for the next three days starting today, with similar alerts in place for various other districts as well.

Widespread alerts across the State

A yellow alert has been declared in 30 districts today, with the exception of Uttara Kannada district. A red alert has been issued for Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru districts.

Rainfall continued throughout the night in Bengaluru, with showers persisting in many areas by the afternoon. The Meteorological Department has stated that "there is a possibility of heavy rain at night."

For 13 June, a red alert remains in place for Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada and Chikkamagaluru districts.

An orange alert has been issued for Belgaum, Dharwad, Gadag, Hassan and Kodagu districts.

Yellow alerts have been declared for Bengaluru, Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagara, Chamarajanagara, Mysuru, Tumakuru and several other districts.

For 14 June, red alerts have again been issued for Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu.

Orange alerts are in effect for Belgaum, Dharwad, Haveri, Hassan and Mysuru, while yellow alerts cover all remaining districts, including Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Bengaluru and Bengaluru Rural.

Rainfall forecast

Widespread light to moderate rainfall is expected across the interior districts between 11 and 13 June. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated locations.

From 14 to 20 June, moderate rainfall is forecast to continue, accompanied by cloudy skies.

In Bengaluru, light rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected.
