Bengaluru: A couple were killed and two others injured late on Saturday night when a speeding ambulance allegedly jumped a red light and crashed into several two-wheelers at a traffic signal in central Bengaluru, police said.

The incident occurred at around 11 pm near the K H Junction, close to the Shantinagar bus stand. According to eyewitnesses, the ambulance was travelling at high speed when it lost control and rammed into a line of waiting motorcycles. It then dragged one of the scooters for several metres before coming to a stop after crashing into a signal control post.

The victims, identified as Ismail (40) and his wife Sameen Banu (33), were riding a Honda Dio scooter when the vehicle struck them. They were rushed to hospital but succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival. Two others were also injured in the crash and have since undergone treatment, police said.

The ambulance driver allegedly fled the scene immediately after the accident but was traced and detained by police on Sunday morning.

Following the collision, angry bystanders overturned the ambulance, alleging that it was speeding despite carrying no patient at the time.

Videos from the scene showed locals attempting to push the overturned vehicle, with several damaged two-wheelers and the broken signal post visible in the background.

Officers from the Wilson Garden traffic police station and other senior officials visited the spot soon after the incident. Police have registered a case and are questioning the driver as part of an ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash.

Earlier this week, a couple in Bengaluru allegedly chased a biker and rammed their car into it, killing one of the two riders instantly.
