Chennai: The air in the swearing-in hall was thick with history and unspoken promises.

As R Sabarinathan, the newly elected MLA for Virugumbakkam, stood before the register that would formalise his political life, he did not reach for the pen immediately. Instead, he turned his gaze toward the man who had been his North Star since childhood. With a voice full of reverence, he asked, “Anna, shall I sign?” This simple question, asked directly to Thalapathy Vijay, the leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), encapsulated a thirty-year journey of loyalty that transcends the typical leader-follower dynamic.

A legacy born in the front seat of a cinema career

The story of Sabarinathan is inseparable from the story of his father, Rajendran. Back when Vijay was a budding actor making his debut in ‘Naalaiya Theerpu’, Rajendran was the man behind the wheel as his personal driver. Over the decades, as Vijay transformed into a cinematic icon and eventually a political force, Rajendran remained his most trusted shadow. Sabarinathan was born into this world of quiet service; as a toddler, he didn't see a "superstar”, he saw an elder brother who would often hold him in his lap while discussing the day’s work with his father. Vijay didn't just employ the family; he took a personal interest in the boy’s upbringing, ensuring he received the education and guidance needed to thrive.

Choosing the people over a career abroad

Like any parent who has worked hard in a supportive role, Rajendran’s greatest dream was to see his son reach the heights of professional stability. Sabarinathan fulfilled this by becoming an engineer and securing a high-paying job in Qatar in 2021. However, when the clarion call for the formation of TVK was sounded, the comfort of an overseas career couldn't compete with the debt of gratitude Sabarinathan felt he owed his mentor.
While his father was initially hesitant to let him leave a secure life, it was Vijay who stepped in, recognising the fire in the young man he had watched grow up. Vijay convinced Rajendran that his son had a higher calling, allowing Sabarinathan to return to Chennai in 2024 to serve the very streets of Virugumbakkam where he had spent his youth.

The most emotional oath in the Assembly

The moment Sabarinathan asked for Vijay’s nod before signing his oath was the final bridge between his past and his future. For the TVK leader, seeing the boy who once sat on his lap now standing as a representative of the people was a moment of immense pride.

For Sabarinathan, the signature was not just a legal requirement but a pledge of allegiance to the man who had educated him and treated him like family. By defeating a DMK stronghold in his maiden election, Sabarinathan proved that the bond of "Anna" and "Thambi" (younger brother) is a potent force in the new era of Tamil Nadu politics—a bond sealed not just with votes, but with decades of genuine love.
