Anna Hazare admitted to Mumbai ICU after health condition deteriorates

Social activist Anna Hazare has been hospitalised in Mumbai following a viral infection, acute dehydration and kidney-related issues.

Hazare was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Bombay Hospital on Monday and is under the care of Dr Gautam Bhansali.

The Gandhian activist was taken to the hospital in a cardiac ambulance along with caretakers from his village. Medical tests are underway, following which doctors will determine the next course of treatment.

Last week, Hazare was admitted to Vedant Hospital in Shirur after experiencing urinary problems. His condition improved after around three days of treatment.

However, his creatinine levels increased during the treatment, following which doctors decided to shift him to Mumbai for further treatment.

Hazare is one of India's best-known social activists and has been associated with anti-corruption campaigns for decades.

He rose to national prominence in 2011 during the India Against Corruption movement, which drew thousands of people to protests and brought the issue of corruption to the centre of national political discourse.

Long before the 2011 movement gave him nationwide recognition, Hazare was known across Maharashtra for his social work and campaigns against corruption.

He is currently being monitored at the Mumbai hospital as doctors assess his condition and decide on further treatment.
