UP cadre IPS Anand Swaroop appointed as new Special Secretary; Anupama Nilekar Chandra joins NHRC

New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared a major reshuffle in senior security leadership, appointing Anand Swaroop as the new Special Secretary (Internal Security) within the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Swaroop, a 1992-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, currently serves as the Director General (Investigation) at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). According to the government order issued Friday, he will succeed Praveen Vashista in the critical internal security post.

The order specifies that Swaroop’s tenure will begin upon his assumption of charge and continue until his superannuation on August 31, 2029, or until further instructions are issued.

In a related move, the ACC approved the appointment of Anupama Nilekar Chandra to fill the vacancy at the NHRC. Chandra, a 1994-batch IPS officer currently serving as Special Director General of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), will take over as the Director General (Investigation) at the human rights body.

The shifts are part of a broader series of high-level administrative changes intended to streamline federal oversight and investigative functions.
