Amit Shah’s high-level security review: Can J&K really go terror-free?

Srinagar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday chaired a high-level security review meeting on Jammu and Kashmir and directed all security forces to continue counter-terror operations in a mission mode, with a focus on dismantling terrorist infrastructure and choking terror financing networks.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Shah asked all security agencies to remain alert and work in close coordination to ensure that the security gains achieved after the abrogation of Article 370 are sustained. He reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving the goal of a “terror-free J&K” at the earliest.
The Home Minister assured that all necessary resources would be made available to security forces for counter-terror efforts. He also reaffirmed the Modi government’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism, stating that sustained and coordinated action has significantly weakened the terror ecosystem in the region.
Shah appreciated the efforts of security agencies in improving the overall security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and emphasised the need for continued synergy among all stakeholders.
The meeting was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the Union Home Secretary, the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, the J&K Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police, heads of Central Armed Police Forces, and other senior officials. This was the first high-level J&K security review meeting chaired by the Home Minister in 2026.
The review came amid an ongoing combing and search operation in the forest area of Kamadh Nullah in Kathua district, following an encounter between security forces and terrorists. Officials said an exchange of fire took place on Wednesday involving the J&K Police’s Special Operations Group.
The Inspector General of Police, Jammu, said on social media that despite difficult conditions including darkness, dense vegetation and challenging terrain, security forces were continuing the operation, with teams of the CRPF also participating in the joint effort.
