Guwahati: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), led by Badruddin Ajmal, has officially kick-started its campaign for the 2026 Assam Assembly Elections by releasing its first list of nine candidates. The announcement highlights a mix of experienced incumbents and fresh faces, including two women nominees.

This election marks a major milestone as it is the first to be held following the 2023 delimitation exercise, which reshaped several constituency boundaries across the state.

Key highlights of the AIUDF candidate list

The party has renominated three sitting MLAs, though some have been shifted to different constituencies due to the impact of delimitation.

Retained & Shifted MLAs:

Aminul Islam: The sitting MLA from Dhing will now contest from Rupahihat.

Hafiz Rafiqul Islam: Formerly representing Jania (which was affected by delimitation), he has been fielded from the newly created Mandia seat.

Nizanur Rahman: Set to seek re-election from his stronghold in Gauripur.

New Women Faces:

Minakshi Rahman: Nominated for the Paka Betbari constituency.

Sabana Akhtar: Fielded from Bilasipara.Other Notable

Nominees:

Abu Taher Bepari (Parbatjhora): A former Congress leader who joined AIUDF in 2025.

Rejaul Karim Sarkar (Srijangram): Former AAMSU president who briefly joined Congress before moving to AIUDF.

Matiur Rahman (Dhing) and Siddique Ahmed (Laharighat) round out the first list.

The Assam assembly elections for 126 constituencies are expected to take place next month. This will be the first assembly election after the delimitation exercise, which was done in 2023.

AIUDF is not part of any opposition alliance, although it had tried to join the Congress-led bloc.

Presently, the ruling BJP's strength in the 126-member Assam assembly is 64, while its allies AGP has nine MLAs, UPPL has seven and BPF has three members.
