Tripura court comes calling: Abhishek Banerjee ordered to appear in person

Guwahati: Amid heightened political activity within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), party national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee has received a fresh legal notice from a court in Tripura.

The Khowai district court has directed Banerjee to appear in person on June 22 in connection with a complaint that was filed at the Khowai police station following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.

The summons was routed through a lower court in Alipore, Kolkata, which appointed a bailiff to ensure its delivery.

As part of the process, the bailiff first submitted the court notice to the Kalighat Police Station, which has jurisdiction over the residence of both TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee.

According to sources familiar with the development, the summons was eventually received on Banerjee's behalf by senior Trinamool leader and party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh.

The case stems from a complaint lodged in Tripura in the aftermath of the fiercely contested 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.

While details of the allegations have not been publicly elaborated in the latest court communication, the matter has remained pending before the judicial authorities for several years.

The development comes at a politically sensitive time for the TMC, with the party already grappling with internal turbulence and growing scrutiny over its organisational and political affairs.

The court's directive now puts the spotlight back on a case dating back to one of the most contentious election periods in recent Bengal political history.
