‘Let’s both show our degrees’: Abhijeet Dipke challenges PM Modi over 12-year degree secrecy

Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke has challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to publicly show their educational degrees, as fresh questions circulate online about Dipke’s claimed education at Boston University.

What did Abhijeet Dipke say?

Dipke responded to renewed questions about his educational credentials in a post on X on Thursday.

“People are really running out of patience waiting to see my degree,” Dipke wrote, before comparing the situation with the long-running debate over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications.

He then directly challenged Modi, writing, “let’s both show our degrees and put an end to this.”

The latest remarks mark another instance in which Dipke has used the controversy surrounding his educational background to question the disclosure of the Prime Minister’s academic records.

Why are questions being raised about Dipke’s Boston University education?

The latest controversy followed a podcast involving host Prakhar Gupta and activist Sonam Wangchuk.

According to the claims cited in the report, Gupta said that one of his close friends had studied at Boston University and had also participated in protests associated with Dipke’s organisation.

Gupta did not identify the friend but claimed that the person later examined Dipke’s educational credentials and allegedly found no record of him graduating from Boston University.

These claims have circulated on social media. They have not, by themselves, established that Dipke did not attend or graduate from the university.

Dipke has previously rejected questions about his education and said that he attended Boston University on a scholarship.

What has Dipke said about his education?

Dipke addressed the issue in an interview with journalist Barkha Dutt, where he said his education at Boston University had been funded through a scholarship.

He also said he had taken an education loan that he was required to repay.

During the interview, Dipke reportedly showed a scholarship letter from Boston University as evidence supporting his account.

He has therefore maintained that his education in the United States was funded through legitimate financial assistance rather than being financed entirely by his family.

Why did his family’s finances also come under scrutiny?

Questions about Dipke’s education had surfaced earlier, including over how his studies in the US were financed.

RTI activist Amit Tiwari from Surat sought scrutiny of the finances of Dipke’s father, Bhagwanrao Dipke, a retired Maharashtra government employee.

Tiwari questioned how the family could have financed education in the US while Dipke’s father was working as a junior engineer with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation.

Tiwari told ANI that his father’s salary was around ₹60,000–65,000 and questioned how the family could afford the overseas education.

Dipke has disputed the implication that his family finances were responsible for funding his education, saying that he received a scholarship from Boston University and also took an education loan.

What has Dipke said about Modi’s degree?

Dipke’s latest post also revived the political debate surrounding Prime Minister Modi’s educational qualifications.

He questioned why the Delhi High Court had refused to order disclosure of Modi’s degree and referred to arguments he said he had encountered regarding the relationship between academic credentials and public disclosure.

Dipke wrote: “Why did the Delhi high court refuse to disclose the PM’s degree?”

He then linked the issue to the criticism being directed at him over his own qualifications.

BJP leaders have previously displayed documents relating to Modi’s educational qualifications and have maintained that the controversy over his degree has already been settled through legal proceedings.

The Cockroach Janta Party has also defended Dipke against questions about his educational expenses.

Party spokesperson Vaishnavi Gaur criticised the scrutiny of a private individual’s education expenses while referring to questions surrounding the PM CARES Fund.

Her response was directed at those seeking information about how Dipke’s education was financed.

Why the degree controversy matters

The latest exchange turns a dispute over Dipke’s educational credentials into a broader political argument about transparency and disclosure of academic records.

There are two separate issues at play. The first concerns claims about whether Dipke studied at or graduated from Boston University. Dipke has publicly maintained that he studied there and has cited a scholarship letter in support of his account. Claims circulating online that no graduation record exists remain allegations unless independently established through authoritative university records or other documentary evidence.
