17th Tamil Nadu Assembly: Inaugural session to convene Monday for MLA swearing-in

Chennai: The 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has been formally summoned to convene its inaugural session at 9:30 a.m. on Monday within the Assembly chamber at the State Secretariat.
According to an official government communiqué released Sunday, the newly elected representatives will undergo the process of making an affirmation or taking the oath of office during this first sitting. Legislative officials have directed all members to produce their election certificates as a mandatory requirement for the swearing-in ceremony.
The administrative calendar continues on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., when the House will conduct elections to select the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
A New Administration Begins
The legislative summons follows a historic shift in state leadership. On Sunday, Joseph Vijay officially assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
While the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) did not secure an outright majority in the 234-member Assembly independently, Vijay successfully orchestrated a coalition to move past the 118-seat threshold. By securing endorsements from the Congress, VCK, CPI, CPI (M), and IUML, the Chief Minister consolidated a block of 120 MLAs to establish the new government.
Initial Policy Directives
Immediately upon taking the helm, the Chief Minister introduced three landmark public welfare initiatives. The nascent administration’s first executive actions target:
- Energy: Reforms and subsidies related to state electricity.
- Protection: Enhanced measures for women’s safety.
- Public Health: A comprehensive program for drug eradication across the state.
The rapid introduction of these schemes underscores the administration's intent to fulfill campaign promises as the 18th Legislative Assembly begins its term.
