A medal born of midnight struggles

Deepak Kandpal, hailing from a small town in Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar district, has today become a symbol of perseverance and hope for thousands of youths across India.

Born to a father who worked as a taxi driver and a mother who managed the home, Deepak grew up in modest circumstances. His family lived in a rented room in the town of Garud — far from luxury, but enriched by hope and determination.

Despite financial hardships, Deepak’s resolve to serve the nation was unshaken. He completed his early schooling at a local public school (up to class 8), then moved to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Gagrigole for classes 9–12. There, his academic excellence shone brightly — he finished class 12 as the district topper.

After school, Deepak went to Delhi for further studies at Delhi University, and at the same time, prepared for the highly competitive entrance exam for NDA. His determination, discipline, and promise carried him through — in 2022, he secured admission to NDA.

Rising Above Challenges — At NDA and Beyond

Life at NDA is demanding: academics, physical training, leadership training, discipline, and mental toughness — all under one roof. Over the three years of rigorous training, Deepak distinguished himself not just academically, but in physical fitness, leadership, and overall performance. His balanced excellence across all these domains set him apart among hundreds of cadets.

At the 149th Passing Out Parade (POP) held recently, Deepak was declared the best cadet of his course. He was awarded the highly prestigious President's Gold Medal — the top honour at NDA, conferred for “overall excellence over the entire training period.” The medal was pinned on his ceremonial uniform by Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, Chief of the Navy, who was the chief guest at the parade.

For a boy whose childhood dream of joining the armed forces began in a small Uttarakhand town, the moment was nothing short of a dream come true — not just for him, but for his family. The taxi-driver father who worked tirelessly to support his son’s education, the mother who stood by, the rented room that housed their aspirations — all came together in this moment of triumph.
