Times Square shooting: Why did a 17-year-old allegedly open fire? Video shows panic

New York: Panic erupted in New York City's Times Square after gunfire broke out in one of the world's busiest tourist districts, sending crowds running for cover.
Police have taken a 17-year-old suspect into custody as investigators work to determine the full circumstances behind the incident, which authorities believe stemmed from a dispute rather than a random attack.
Chaos unfolds in the heart of Manhattan
The incident occurred shortly after 3:30 pm on Thursday near Broadway between West 44th and 45th Streets in Times Square, an area packed with tourists, commuters and local businesses.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), a dispute involving a large group escalated into violence when a 26-year-old man was slashed in the neck. Moments later, police say a 17-year-old opened fire on the same group, causing widespread panic throughout the area.
Authorities reported a second shooting incident near West 45th Street and Eighth Avenue shortly afterwards. Fortunately, no one was struck by the gunfire in either shooting.
The man who suffered the knife injury was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover.
Teenager taken into custody
Police confirmed that a 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody following the shooting. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and investigators are continuing to gather evidence.
As of Thursday night, no formal charges had been announced. Authorities said additional individuals may be questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Due to legal protections surrounding minors, police have not publicly identified the suspect.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and witness accounts to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the violence.

Crowds flee as gunshots ring out
Witnesses described scenes of confusion and fear as the sound of gunfire echoed through Times Square.
People rushed into nearby shops and restaurants seeking shelter. A nearby Raising Cane's restaurant became packed within seconds as frightened visitors scrambled indoors.
Several witnesses reported hearing loud bangs before seeing crowds run in multiple directions. Others said they immediately dropped to the floor or sought cover inside nearby stores.
Tourists visiting the area said the incident unfolded so quickly that many initially struggled to understand what was happening before realising gunshots had been fired.
The panic briefly transformed one of New York City's most crowded public spaces into a scene of chaos.
Heavy police response secures area
Dozens of NYPD officers quickly flooded the area and established a security perimeter around the scene.
Investigators were seen examining a blue Hyundai after the vehicle owner reported that something had struck the car during the incident. Police later recovered a weapon near that location.
The rapid police response helped secure the area and prevent further panic as officers searched for evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Parts of Times Square were temporarily cordoned off while investigators conducted their work.

Authorities say attack was not random
Preliminary findings suggest the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving multiple individuals rather than a random attack targeting members of the public.
Officials have not yet disclosed the exact motive behind the confrontation, but investigators believe the individuals involved were known to one another.
The distinction is important for authorities seeking to reassure residents and tourists that the incident was not an indiscriminate act of violence.
Nevertheless, the shooting has renewed concerns about public safety in Times Square, one of the most heavily visited locations in the United States.
Fresh safety concerns in New York
The incident occurred only days after another gun-related event connected to celebrations following the New York Knicks' NBA championship victory.
Although Thursday's shooting appears unrelated, the back-to-back incidents have prompted renewed debate over security in Manhattan's entertainment district.
Times Square attracts millions of visitors each year and remains one of New York City's most recognisable landmarks. Any violent incident in the area inevitably attracts widespread attention and raises questions about crowd safety.
Police continue to investigate the shooting and have urged anyone with information or video footage to come forward.
