Nashik: In a sensational case that has triggered widespread outrage, Nashik Police on March 18  arrested self-styled godman and retired Navy officer Ashok Kharat, popularly known as “Captain,” on charges of sexual exploitation, rape, and blackmail.

The arrest was made by the Crime Branch following a complaint filed by a woman who alleged that Kharat sexually abused her over a prolonged period under the pretext of offering spiritual and astrological guidance.

According to police officials, the accused manipulated victims by exploiting their personal vulnerabilities and belief in his predictions.

Investigators revealed that Kharat allegedly lured women to his office and residence, often claiming that their families were under threat or facing serious problems. He would then reportedly administer sedatives and sexually assault them.

The abuse is said to have continued for several years, with the complainant stating that she was repeatedly assaulted between 2022 and 2025.

Meanwhile, a video has surfaced online showing Maharashtra Women’s Commission Chairperson Rupali Chakankar performing a ritual in which she is seen touching the feet of Ashok Kharat, who has now been arrested by the Nashik Crime Branch in a rape case. Investigators are also probing 58 videos allegedly linked to sexual exploitation recovered during the probe.

A breakthrough in the case came after police recovered a pen drive containing at least 58 videos, some of which are said to be objectionable. Officials suspect that these recordings were used to blackmail victims and prevent them from approaching authorities.

Shortly after Kharat’s arrest on March 18, an alleged obscene video linked to him surfaced on social media, intensifying public outrage. Police have urged people not to circulate such content, stating that it could hamper the investigation.

Kharat, who previously served in the Merchant Navy and later gained prominence as an astrologer, was known to have connections with several politicians, businessmen, and celebrities.

His influence and high-profile associations have added a political dimension to the case, with opposition leaders demanding a fair and transparent probe.

He has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to rape, criminal intimidation, and exploitation, along with provisions of the Maharashtra Black Magic Act. A local court has remanded him to police custody until March 24 as investigations continue.

Authorities are now probing whether more victims were targeted using similar methods and have appealed to other potential survivors to come forward.

The case has not only exposed alleged abuse under the guise of spirituality but has also raised serious concerns about the misuse of influence and trust.
