Kolkata: A medical examination has confirmed the gang-rape of a first-year student of South Calcutta Law College, corroborating her complaint that she was assaulted by an alumnus and two senior students on the evening of June 25 inside the college premises.

Kolkata Police officials said the 24-year-old student underwent a medical test on June 26, which revealed “evidence of forceful penetration, bite marks, and nail scratches on her body.” All three accused were arrested on Thursday.

The prime accused, a former student of the college and currently a practising criminal lawyer, is alleged to have raped the woman while the two other accused stood guard outside the room, according to the complaint lodged with Kasba Police Station.

Speaking to PTI, Chief Public Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal said:

“As per Supreme Court guidelines, even those who aid in the commission of a gang-rape are considered equally liable. In this case, two of the accused helped facilitate the crime and have been charged accordingly.”

The case has reignited concerns over campus safety in Kolkata, drawing parallels with a similar 2024 case in which a medical intern was raped and murdered inside RG Kar Medical College.
