Houston: A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of an Indian student at a petrol station in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday night, in a case that has left the Indian-American community shocked and anxious over rising violence.

The victim, Chandrashekar Pole, 28, was working a part-time shift at the gas station on Eastchase Parkway when he was allegedly shot by the suspect, identified by police as Richard Florez of North Richland Hills. Florez reportedly fled the scene after the attack.

Pole, originally from Hyderabad, had completed a Bachelor of Dental Surgery before travelling to the United States two years ago to pursue a Master’s degree in Data Analytics at the University of North Texas in Denton. He had completed his degree six months ago and was actively seeking employment, his brother Damodar told reporters. In the meantime, Pole had taken up part-time work at the gas station to support himself financially.

A GoFundMe campaign has since been launched to help fund the repatriation of his body and to support his grieving family.

According to Fort Worth police, shortly after the shooting, Florez opened fire on another vehicle about a mile away. No injuries were reported in that incident. He then crashed into a gate while attempting to enter a residence on Meadowbrook Drive, where officers later arrested him. A firearm was recovered from his vehicle.

“They also recovered a gun inside the vehicle at that scene… suspect is currently in the hospital, but he has been booked for the homicide,” Fort Worth Police spokesperson Officer Brad Perez told NBC 5 Dallas Fort-W0rth.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Pole’s identity and stated he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have yet to determine a motive for the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing. Officials from Fort Worth and Tarrant County noted that further statements and details have been delayed due to a local government shutdown.

The Consulate General of India in Houston has confirmed it is in contact with Pole’s family and is assisting with arrangements to repatriate his remains to India.

The killing has once again raised serious concerns over the safety of Indian students and professionals working part-time jobs in the US, particularly in roles that may leave them vulnerable during night shifts.

The incident follows a troubling pattern of violence involving Indian nationals and students in the United States. In January this year, a 26-year-old from Telangana was shot dead in Connecticut, while another man from Ranga Reddy district was found with bullet wounds in an unrelated case. In September, a 30-year-old man from Mahabubnagar died in California after being shot by police following an altercation with his roommate.

Such incidents have underscored the risks faced by international students and the challenges their families often encounter in dealing with complex legal and repatriation processes. Indian consulates have frequently stepped in to provide support in such cases, amid growing concerns over the safety and welfare of young professionals and students abroad.
