Horrific! Law student gang-raped in Kolkata college campus, 3 held
Kolkata: Three people, including two current students and one former student of a law college in Kasba, have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a female law student.
According to police sources, the incident reportedly occurred between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm on June 25. After the survivor lodged a complaint, authorities moved swiftly and detained the two current students from the Talbagan area on Thursday evening. Subsequent interrogation led to the arrest of the main accused, a former student of the same college.
Medical exam conducted, forensic investigation underway
The survivor has undergone a medical examination at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, and a forensic team is expected to visit the crime scene for further investigation.
The accused are slated to be produced in court later in the day. Police have not ruled out additional arrests as the investigation progresses.
Political reactions: BJP targets TMC govt
The case has triggered a sharp political response, with BJP leader and national IT cell head Amit Malviya strongly condemning the incident. In a post on social media platform X, Malviya said, “Horrific! A female law student was gang-raped inside a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, on 25th June, by none other than a former student and two college staff members. Shockingly, reports suggest that a TMC member is also involved. The horror of RG Kar hasn’t faded, and yet such heinous crimes continue to rise daily in Bengal.”
He further accused the ruling Trinamool Congress government of fostering a culture of impunity and claimed that West Bengal has become unsafe for women under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. “Rape has turned into a routine tragedy. The BJP stands with the victim and her family,” he added.
Background: Echoes of the RG Kar incident
This latest case comes less than a year after a similarly shocking crime at RG Kar Medical College, where a postgraduate trainee was raped and murdered inside the hospital premises in August. That case had also sparked statewide protests and calls for stricter safety measures on campuses.
