Gurugram: A 25-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a 23-year-old woman and attempting to rape her near Leopard Trail, a popular hangout spot in the Aravalli region of Gurugram, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in the early hours when the woman and her male friend were returning from an event and briefly stopped near Leopard Trail. According to the police complaint, a Mahindra Scorpio SUV stopped near them, following which an argument broke out between the accused, identified as Gaurav Rathi, and the woman’s friend.

During the altercation, Rathi allegedly snatched the man’s mobile phone, assaulted him, and forcibly dragged the woman into his SUV before speeding away from the spot. The woman’s friend chased the vehicle in his Hyundai Aura but lost sight of it and subsequently informed the police.

Acting on the information, Gurugram Police launched a search operation and traced the Scorpio around two hours later in Sakatpur, not far from Leopard Trail. The vehicle was found stuck in a drain with a damaged bonnet, indicating rash driving and a possible accident.

Police officials said the accused was found in a half-naked condition inside the vehicle, while the woman was unconscious in the back seat. She was rescued and taken for medical examination.

An FIR has been registered at the Badshahpur police station under sections related to kidnapping and attempted rape. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused runs a fruit stall and had borrowed the SUV from an acquaintance. The vehicle owner is also being questioned.

Police said all angles of the crime are being investigated, and further action will be taken based on forensic and medical reports.
