Fraudsters make use of AI to engage in video chats with victims

Palakkad: Of late, cyber fraudsters are also making use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to con people. They use the technology for engaging in video calls with the victims.
The first step of the fraud is to create a fake social media account. A photo of a random woman picked from the internet will be set as the profile picture of the account. Following this, the potential victim will be spotted. The person will most likely be highly influential and financially sound.
At first, the fraudsters will engage in text chats with the victims and establish a friendship with them. The fraudsters will share the ‘responsibilities’ among themselves, in order to deceive and loot money from people,
When the victims start persuading for a video conversation, the AI comes into play. A virtual image of the woman shown on the profile picture is projected on the screen, helping the fraudsters gain the trust of the people at the other end.
The fraudsters make it a point to not to request for money in the initial stages. Instead, they try to get close to their victims by engaging in conversations related to family affairs and jobs. Amidst the conversations, the fraudsters will claim to have earned a lot of money through online stock investments. Through repeated claims, they eventually succeed in luring their victims into the trap.
