Kochi: Police have issued a fresh notice to YouTuber Mohammed Nihad, popularly known as Thoppi, in a case involving the alleged sharing of obscene visuals of his former friends on social media.

The Aluva Cyber Rural Police have directed Nihad to appear for questioning next week. The latest notice comes after he failed to appear before investigators despite an earlier direction to do so.

Nihad had previously approached the court seeking anticipatory bail in the case. The court disposed of his plea and police subsequently issued a notice asking him to appear for questioning. However, he did not turn up, prompting investigators to issue another notice.

Case follows fallout with former associates

Police allege that Nihad shared nude visuals of two former friends online following a fallout within his close circle. The case was registered under provisions of the Information Technology Act.

Nihad's former associates, identified as Muhammad Mammu, known as Mammu, and Shameer, are also facing a case. Muhammad Mammu was earlier taken into police custody.

The case against the group was registered following a complaint with charges of outraging the modesty of women. A resident of Manjeri had approached the authorities with the complaint, in which Nihad was also named as an accused.

The dispute reportedly followed a disagreement over the sharing of income. Nihad and the two men had previously been associated with each other.

Thoppi has large following among young viewers

Nihad is a popular YouTuber with considerable influence among children and young people, including minors. He rose to prominence through gaming and livestreaming content and built a large following on social media.

His livestreams have faced criticism from various quarters since the beginning, particularly over the language used and some of his conduct during broadcasts.

The latest case adds to the legal scrutiny surrounding the social media personality. Police are continuing their investigation into the allegations and have now asked Nihad to appear for questioning.

The developments come after his YouTube channel was also taken down following police action over alleged obscene content. Police had reported the alleged content to the platform as part of the investigation.

The latest notice, however, specifically relates to the ongoing case concerning the alleged sharing of obscene visuals of his former associates.
