Escalating operational costs have pushed fishermen in Visakhapatnam into financial distress, with soaring fuel prices and inadequate access to modern equipment threatening their livelihoods.

At the Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour, anxiety runs high as the fishing community looks to the upcoming Union Budget for much-needed relief. Fishermen say rising diesel costs have sharply increased daily expenses, while limited financial support has made it difficult to sustain fishing operations.

With the Union Budget scheduled to be presented on February 1, fishermen are urging the Finance Minister to prioritise measures that ensure the survival and long-term growth of the sector. They are calling on both the central and state governments to extend financial aid, fuel subsidies and equipment support.

Visakhapatnam plays a crucial role in India’s seafood exports, serving as a major hub for shrimp and fish supplied to international markets. However, traders warn that rising costs and limited incentives are hurting the competitiveness of Indian seafood globally.

Exporters and processing units are seeking a reduction in export duties and targeted incentives to strengthen the value chain and support employment in coastal regions.

As the budget date approaches, fishermen across coastal Andhra Pradesh are watching closely, hopeful that this year’s Union Budget will provide tangible relief and help stabilise an industry under growing pressure.
