Trump imposes fresh 10% tariff on all imports after supreme court strikes down earlier duties
US President Donald Trump has announced a fresh round of tariffs, imposing a 10% duty on imports from all countries, after the US Supreme Court invalidated his earlier reciprocal global tariffs.
In a 6-3 verdict, the Supreme Court ruled that the previous tariffs were unlawful, stating that the President had overstepped his authority. Dismissing the impact of the ruling, Trump signed a new executive order to keep import taxes in place while his administration explores other legal options.
The latest tariffs are being imposed under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which permits the President to introduce temporary duties of up to 15% to counter trade deficits. The 10% levy will take effect from February 24 and will remain in force for 150 days, unless Congress steps in to extend or block the measure.
Earlier, Trump had said the Supreme Court decision would not affect India, asserting that there was no change in bilateral trade arrangements and reiterating that the “India deal is on.”
However, officials at the White House later clarified that the new tariffs would apply across the board, including to countries that already have trade agreements with the United States,at least for the duration of the temporary order.
