Rare ‘Ghost of the Forest’ owl spotted in Uttarakhand’s Corbett National Park

Nature enthusiasts visiting the Corbett landscape in Uttarakhand were treated to a rare and striking sight recently: the elusive Spot-Bellied Eagle Owl, often referred to as the “ghost of the forest,” was spotted in the Sitabani area of Jim Corbett National Park.

Known for its large size, powerful build and piercing eyes, the Spot-Bellied Eagle Owl is seldom seen in the wild despite not being classified as endangered. Its reputation as the “ghost of the forest” stems from its secretive nature, nocturnal habits and exceptional camouflage that allows it to blend seamlessly into dense forest surroundings.

The recent sighting occurred within the broader Corbett landscape, including the Sitabani forest zone, an area known for its rich biodiversity and relatively undisturbed habitat. Forest watchers say such encounters are uncommon, as the species prefers old-growth, densely wooded forests and typically remains active only after dusk.
