Onapottan brings North Malabar Onam tradition to Kozhikode city

Kozhikode: The traditional Onapottan, a symbolic form of Mahabali associated with Onam celebrations in North Malabar, is making his presence felt in the city as well.

Traditionally seen in rural areas, Onapottan visits homes and shops during the Onam season, offering blessings of prosperity. The silent figure announces his arrival by ringing a bell and is known for his distinctive crown, face paint, straw umbrella and beard.

On Uthradam, Onapottan traditionally takes a bath early in the morning, offers prayers to his ancestors and dresses in the elaborate costume. Once dressed, he observes silence until he returns home.

People welcome Onapottan by offering rice and dakshina. While some performers continue the tradition as part of cultural celebrations, others dress as Onapottan during the season to earn money.

The appearance of Onapottan in urban areas is giving people an opportunity to experience a traditional North Malabar Onam custom that continues to survive across generations.
